Most terraces in Klagenfurt are loud: cramped rows, passing cars, the chatter of three tables over. Here you hear the water. The terrace sits right on the bank of the Kreuzbergl pond, the tables have room between them, and what lies in front of you is not a pavement but the pond with its reeds and its ducks.

That changes how a meal unfolds. No one has to shout to be heard, no one shifts their chair back restlessly after an hour. You order another spritz, let the children run down to the water, watch the lights settle over the pond in the evening – and stay. That's exactly what this terrace is built for.

Cool when it's hot everywhere else

Old trees stand over the terrace. In the Carinthian high summer that's not a detail but the difference between "lovely" and "let's go back inside". While the sun blazes over open squares, here you sit in leafy shade, the water cools the air, and a light breeze off the pond makes even the midday heat bearable.

And the view isn't a street or a row of houses but the Kreuzbergl pond – reeds along the bank, reflections on the water, the odd swan gliding past. It isn't a lake with beach-bar bustle, but a still pond in the green, and that's the whole appeal: a piece of calm, reachable in the middle of Klagenfurt. Come in the evening and you'll watch the last light fade over the pond as the lanterns come on.

What comes to the table outside is the same kitchen as inside: wood-fired pizza, fresh fish, pasta classics and antipasti to share. In the shade by the water it just tastes different – a fish dish and a glass of white wine suit the pond as if someone had invented them for it.

If you want it simple, stay with a Neapolitan pizza – airy crust, soft centre, ideal when the children are hungry and it needs to be quick. Families & aperitivo

For families and for the spritz beforehand

The terrace is family-friendly without having to make a point of it: plenty of room between the tables, the water to watch, and for the little ones there are always easy classics like pizza and pasta. Come with the whole family and you needn't worry about a thing – and the well-behaved dog is welcome too.

And before all that: an aperitivo. A spritz, a glass of prosecco or an alcohol-free aperitivo with something to nibble while the sun drops lower – that's the Italian way to ease into an evening. You're welcome to drop by just for an aperitivo: the restaurant stays open through the afternoon, you don't have to order a meal to sit on the terrace. The aperitivo often turns into dinner anyway – but that's a decision you make at the table.

Quietly located – yet right in Klagenfurt

The Kreuzbergl is a calm local recreation area – joggers, walkers, families. Very close to the city centre, and the Kreuzbergl pond lies right outside our door. There is parking right in front. We don't have a central square or a pedestrian zone. What we do have: quiet, greenery and a shady terrace by the water.

We are not directly on Lake Wörthersee, but at the Kreuzbergl pond – a few minutes from the centre, yet noticeably away from the bustle. That is exactly what makes the difference.

The Fischerwirt has belonged to the Kreuzbergl for many years. About three years ago we took the location over as con amore and gave it a Mediterranean direction.

Practicalities
